WATERTOWER

Year: 2002-2007

Location: Budafok, Budapest

Architects: Perényi Tamás and Kolossa József (architecture), Mérei László and Thoma József (statics)

The work was won on a public design contest.

The essence of the concept was to design a shape that intends to continue the detailed design of the old beautiful water towers, while at the same time focusing on the architectural elegance of the structure with its clean shapes and design. That is why we chose the spherical shell shape, which is not only punctured at one point by the supporting structure, but it is also held by four cantilever beams apart from the column. This emphasized the support of the enormous weight chalice, while also expressing the lightness of the support. This required withdrawing from the circular symmetrical column scheme - the planned horseshoe-shaped support also gave the building a sense of direction and dynamism, so it shows a different view from each direction.
